What does Positron Emission Tomography Mean?

PET Scan Meaning: PET (Positron Emission Tomography) is a diagnostic method used in nuclear medicine, which, in contrast to the morphological/anatomical sectional imaging techniques used in radiology (CT, MRT), obtains information at the molecular level, for example about the body’s metabolism, and depicts this in images. The main area of application for PET is tumor diagnostics in oncological medicine.

PET Scan is a medical diagnostic method that makes metabolic processes in the body visible. A PET imaging is suitable, for example, for the detection and assessment of tumor diseases, but also for the assessment of various brain diseases.

With PET/CT, positron emission tomography and computed tomography are combined. The examinations can be carried out almost simultaneously. A fusion image is created by superimposition, in which the information from both methods complement each other optimally. The type and exact localization of a finding are recognized even more precisely and quickly.

PET/CT Scan Frequently Asked Questions

Positron Emission Tomography (PET) is a special examination method used in nuclear medicine. It provides information about functional processes in the body. Since the PET is always combined with a computed tomography (CT) and both form a unit, one usually speaks of the PET-CT.

Our PET/CT is a state-of-the-art scanner. If you're familiar with a CT, you can also envision a PET scanner: like a CT, just a bit bigger because it's two machines in one.

After injecting the radioactive drug, you have to wait about an hour for the substance to spread throughout your body. The actual recordings on the device take about 30 minutes, and longer for certain questions. In total, you should plan about three hours for a operation PET Scan.

A PET/CT imaging enables a quick, comprehensive and reliable diagnosis, especially in the case of cancer. It is suitable for diagnosing numerous clinical pictures so early that in many cases they can be treated more effectively and in a more targeted manner than before. More and more international studies confirm this assessment.

INITIO Medical has many years of experience with PET and PET-CT in its medical and scientific work.

PET and CT are performed one after the other in the same device. The pure examination time in the device is 20-40 minutes. The total time required is 2-3 hours. During the examination, you lie on a table that moves into the opening of the PET/CT machine. The opening is relatively wide and the tube is relatively short, so you don't have to feel constricted and you can keep in constant contact with the medical staff attending to you.

PET CT Scan is state-of-the-art hybrid imaging that combines positron emission tomography (PET) and computed tomography (CT) in one examination. This allows the simultaneous display of the function and structure of organs and tissues. PET test can be used, for example, to detect tumor foci, metastases or foci of inflammation or to display the metabolism in the brain or in the heart muscle.

It's important to relax, stay as still as possible, and avoid talking while you wait. Because moving and talking can affect where the radiotracer goes on your body.
